Every autumn, from September to November, an enormous mural is put on display in the village of Slindon, West Sussex. It is made from more than 50 different varieties of pumpkin and 30 varieties of squash. Previous subjects include boats, aeroplanes, the night sky and harvest scenes. The tradition was started in 1968 by Ralph Upton, who grew pumpkins in the area for more than 45 years. It has been continued by his son, Robin, and a devoted team. At the accompanying market, many types of pumpkins and squash can be bought. A recipe book, written by Ralph and his wife, Barbara, entitled Pumpkins, Squashes and Things... and How to Cook Them, can also be bought locally for £1.
