Replicating a landscape in miniature
The rise and fall of hills and valleys is replicated in a container, adding interest to a leafy border
ARUSTIC CONTAINER filled with low-growing, mound-forming plants makes an eye-catching garden display which mimics natural hills and valleys. A worn galvanised tin is placed on four downturned flowerpots in a border. This raises it above ground level so it stands free of surrounding foliage, and the full effect of the display’s contours can be enjoyed. A variety of dense plants are chosen, including saxifrage and sedum. Planting contrasting sizes, textures and colours closely together imitates the pattern and shape of the landscape. The plants will thrive best when placed in a shadier spot. Easy to create, this simple container arrangement makes an attractive focal point among the greenery of the September garden.
