The bright, almost other wordly appearance of the seedheads of harlequin glorybower, Clerodendrum trichotomum, bring unexpected colour and interest to the autumn garden. In October, its fragrant white flowers develop into dark blue berries surrounded by five magenta calyces. This starry display works well in a border where its striking appearance can be fully appreciated. The plant prefers fertile, well-drained soil in bright sunshine, but is not fully hardy. In cold weather, it may benefit from being protected by a layer of mulch.
