WINTER’S FINE DETAIL

-

In times of extreme cold, the smallest twigs can be coated in ice lasting many hours into the day. This results in an arresting sight as the sun’s low winter light illuminates the frozen tree. At a latitude of 54°, the line nearest to which York lies, the angle of sunlight can stay as low as 12.5°. The rays illuminate the snow and ice coating, casting the skeleton of the tree into sharp relief.
