Materials

Small embroidery hoop Plain fabric, 1in wider all round than the hoop Small pieces of lace or crochet cut from old doilies, handkerchiefs or items of clothing Small beads Pretty buttons or pieces of broken jewellery

The embroidery hoop fastening is unscrewed and the two parts of the hoop separated. The fabric is stretched over the smaller inner hoop and the larger outer hoop placed over the top, trapping the fabric in between. Keeping the fabric taut, the screw is tightened to close the outer hoop firmly. Decorative pieces of lace or crochet work are stitched to the fabric and embellished with small beads and pretty decorations saved from pieces of clothing or broken jewellery. Excess fabric is trimmed from the back of the hoop for a neat finish.
