How small can be beautiful

-

I have a small London back garden, which I have designed with a contrasting pattern of narrow diagonal pathways, breaking up the space with vertical features in the form of raised beds, arches, tall standard shrubs and trellises for roses. The garden is planted almost entirely with evergreen shrubs, chosen for their leaf colours, to give year-round interest. To provide contrasting splashes of colour, tubs and urns are planted with seasonal bulbs and annuals. There is a small parterre in the centre, a lawn beyond the trellis and an arbour in the corner. It is amazing what you can do with a relatively small space. Alan Paul, via email
