TO MAKE THE ARTWORK

-

Step 1: Having drawn around the edges of the wood on a piece of paper, Ella uses a heart-shaped cardboard stencil to mark her shape in the centre. This can also be done freehand. The square outline of the wood is then cut out.

Step 2: Dots are drawn at 1cm intervals around the outline of the shape and the paper placed exactly on top of the piece of wood. An adult taps a nail through each dot, taking care not to knock the nail through the other side of the wood. Once the nails have been tapped securely in place, the paper is ripped away.

Step 3: A slip knot is made in the yarn and hooked over any nail. The knot is pulled tight and the loose end trimmed off.

Step 4: Mya now winds the yarn back and forth in a random pattern, and gradually the shape forms. Winding the yarn twice around each nail helps keep it secure and taut. Once the shape is completed to her satisfaction, the yarn is tied tightly around one of the nails and cut off.
