Soft, lacy shawl to crochet

Inspired by the symmetry of roof tiles, this comforting open weave shawl is a perfect project for cold nights in

-

The pattern for this delicate yet cosy shawl was inspired by the interlocking terracotta pantiles on the roof of a Fenland cottage. On a winter’s day, such detail becomes more noticeable than when overshadowed by foliage during warmer months, and the design mirrors the pleasing uniformity of the tiled roof. The stitch employed for the wrap uses stretches of chain and little picot loops to create an attractive open trellis pattern. However, the holes are not so big as to prevent the fabric from providing warmth on a wintry walk. The pattern is deceptively easy to follow and, despite its intricate look, is ideal for beginners to try. One satisfying element is its methodical repetition, so once the straightforward repeat has been crocheted a few times, it will soon become familiar. This makes it a perfect pattern to enjoy with friends on a craft night, and the finished shawl will delight with its soft weave and pretty gossamer effect.

“Then don on thy bonnet an’ shawl, An’ coom let’s be walkin’ away; I’s fairly beginnin’ to stall To see thee sit dazzin’ all t’ day” Thomas Blackah, ‘Coom, Don On Thy Bonnet An’ Shawl’
