-

Abbreviations ch chain slst slip stitch dc double crochet Cast on multiples of 4 stitches plus 4. For this shawl, a foundation chain of 164 is made and wrapped around the shoulders. The multiples of 4 stitches plus 4 are used as a guide to reach the desired length. Row 1: 1dc in 8th ch from hook, 3ch, 1 slst in dc just made (this creates a picot), *7ch, skip 3ch, 1dc in next ch, 3ch, 1 slst in dc just made (picot), repeat from * ending 1dc in last ch. Turn. Row 2: 7ch, skip first 3ch, *1dc in next ch (4th of 7ch), picot, 7ch, skip [3ch, next dc, picot, 3ch], repeat from * ending 1dc in 4th of 7ch. Turn. Repeat Row 2 ending: 1dc in 4th of 7ch. Continue adding rows to the shawl until it reaches the desired width. For this shawl, 20 rows were made after the initial foundation chain. To finish: turn, 7ch, skip 3ch, dc in next ch, picot, break yarn and weave in ends.

Note: This pattern can also be used to make a beautiful scarf using a shorter foundation chain and fewer rows, or a more dense shawl with smaller gaps, using Aran or worsted yarn and a 5 or 6mm hook.
