Hay Bluff and Twmpa
Towering above Hay-on-Wye, Hay Bluff, at the northern tip of the Black Mountains, is a wonderful spot to appreciate the spectacular and varied beauty of the area. From its 2,221ft (677m) summit on a clear day, it offers views over the Wye Valley into Radnorshire, west across the Brecon Beacons and Carmarthen Fans, and east into Herefordshire. If driving, there is a car park by a stone circle, located just half a mile north-west of the bluff, which is reached by following Forest Road out of Hay, signposted Capel-y-ffin. It is then a short, steep climb to the summit. Walking from Hay-on-Wye, the Offa’s Dyke Path, south from the town centre, leads for approximately 3 miles to the hill. The path passes Cusop and Tack Wood before arriving at the foot of the climb. A walk of approximately 1½ miles along the ridge leads to Twmpa, also known as Lord Hereford’s Knob, a peak of 2,260ft (690m), with further stunning views of the Beacons and Herefordshire. There is a car park approximately a mile to the east of the hill on the Gospel Pass.
