A PEACEFUL LIFE
As Britain’s only poisonous snake, the adder has gained a disproportionate reputation as a dangerous reptile. In fact, this very secretive and timid species is only likely to bite a human in self-defence. Those who have been bitten have usually been unlucky, though caution around the snake is recommended as the fangs of even the smallest youngsters can pierce the skin. Dogs should be kept on a lead in habitats likely to be home to adders. Bites are almost never fatal and can be easily treated.
