Also known as the winter windflower, Balkan anemone or sapphire anemone, Anemone blanda originates from south-eastern Europe and the Middle East. Its saucer-shaped flowers span 1-1½in (3-4cm) and usually have up to 14 petals. As well as intense violet-blue, the blooms may also be pink or white. Growing to 6in (15cm tall), it prefers well-drained soil and is ideal for underplanting in borders.

?? ?? Floating in a pail of water, the petals of the daisy-like flowers open to full effect, creating a delicate informal display.
