A collection of pale seashells can be used to mark out planting areas in newly prepared soil. A piece of string is first cut to slightly longer than the radius of the largest arch. It is then divided into the desired number of sections, and knots are tied equidistant from one another along its length. One end of the string is tied to a stake, which is planted at the base of the arches. The string is then used as a compass to create equally spaced arcs. The shells help to keep track of seeds being planted as well as making a pretty display when the first shoots have yet to emerge.
