HOW TO MAKE THE HOOKS

- Project: Sue Martin Photography: Richard Faulks ▯ ▯

Step 1: A spoon is wrapped in a piece of thick fabric. The bowl of the spoon is beaten with the hammer until it flattens, turning it from one side to the other, taking care to keep fingers out of the way.

Step 2: Once flattened, the spoon is laid on a piece of scrap wood and a centre punch used to mark points approximately ¾in (2cm) apart where the spoon will be screwed to the back board. Using a metal bit, the two holes are drilled, taking care to file away any sharp edges. This is repeated for the remaining spoons.

Step 3: With its bowl wrapped in protective cloth, a spoon is trapped in a vice with the 2in (5cm) wide piece of wood. The vice is tightened to hold the spoon and wood firm, leaving the whole of the handle proud of the vice. The wooden pole is placed on top of the wood in the vice and the spoon handle bent over it towards the body. The force of a hammer may be needed to do this, working back from the bowl of the spoon. Covering the spoon with a cloth will prevent damage. The process is repeated for each spoon, to create five hooks.

Step 4: All five spoons are laid in the desired place on the backing board, making sure they line up straight and are equidistant from each other. Their position is marked through the drilled holes with a pencil. The spoons are removed and holes drilled into each mark.

Step 5: The screws are drilled firmly into place.
