MAKING THE BUTTERFLIES

-

Step 1: A selection of colours are mixed using a little paint on an old plate. On a protected table, a sheet of watercolour paper is brushed with water, covering it completely. Using a thick brush, the girls paint a rough butterfly shape on the wet paper. Allowing the colours to smudge and bleed into each other adds to the effect. Additional pattern may be added by flicking paint, taking care it does not fly onto clothing. The sheets of paper are then set aside to dry in the sun.

Step 2: Sydney wraps a piece of fabric around the cardboard tube. She makes sure it is cut to the same length and wide enough to cover the outer surface before gluing it in place. She then takes two pieces of string, 4in (10cm) long, with a knot tied near each exposed end, and glues them to the inside of the tube for the antennae.

Step 3: Once the sheets of paper are dry, they are folded in half. Molly draws the outline of one side of a butterfly on the back of the paper, working outwards from the folded edge. The shape is cut with scissors and folded out to reveal the wings. The fabric-covered body is glued along the centre fold to complete the butterfly.
