GENTLE SCOTTISH GIANT

-

Originating in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides, the Highland cow has since migrated further south and is found on the slopes of the Sussex Downs and the Fens of East Anglia. The Highland cattle registry, established in 1885, describes two distinct types of cattle: the West Highland, or Kyloe, living in the Outer Hebrides, and the mainland cow. However, in written records, the first mention of Highland cattle dates back to the 12th century, while archaeological finds go back even further to the 6th century, making it the oldest registered cattle breed in the world. Often known as the gentle giants of Scotland, they are recognised for their long horns and flowing, woolly coats in shades of russet, tan, black, white, grey and brindle, which keep in warmth during harsh winters. Today, the Queen is the patron of the Highland Cattle Society and owns an award-winning herd, founded at Balmoral in Scotland.
