PRUDENT PREPARATION

-

When clearing a newly acquired allotment of weeds, it is important to be able to identify them and know whether or not they are annual or perennial, as this will ensure the most effective method of removal is used. Perennial weeds, such as couch grass, bindweed and nettles, are the most problematic, since they not only distribute seeds, but also regenerate through the roots. The tap root often extends deep underground: therefore, digging up the surface weeds and rotavating the soil will only result in more problems as the roots regrow. Care should be taken to carefully dig underneath the plant and patiently tease out the roots, as this will help to eradicate them and ultimately save time.
