SOMETIMES it’s said that players can’t bridge the gap between club and internatio­nal football. They may be brilliant at club level, but when they come up against the very best at national level they seem to shrink.

Perhaps their technique isn’t quite good enough or maybe the pressure of representi­ng their country is too much.

But for Eduardo Vargas the reverse argument could be made. He’s brilliant on the internatio­nal stage, but doesn’t perform for his club – or should I say clubs. For Vargas has turned into a nomad in the last four years. He’s played club football in pretty much all the football powerhouse­s – Italy, Brazil, Spain, England and now Germany. While he may have more languages and money under his belt, that amount of moves for someone who has only just turned 26 is hardly conducive to being at your best.
