Alan Shearer
After rejecting coaching and assistant roles at Newcastle in both February and November 2008, it was a surprise when on April 1, 2009, he became the caretaker-manager of his former club with eight games remaining of the season. Those eight games earned Newcastle five points out of possible 24.
The final game of the season saw Shearer’s side defeated at Aston Villa 1-0 and they were relegated, ending their 16-year unbroken spell in the Premier League whilst local rivals Sunderland survived.
Not surprisingly, Shearer did not get the manager’s job on a permanent basis. Chris Hughton took over and led Newcastle back into the Premier League at the first attempt.
Derby County on a three-year contract. In his first season he led them to the Championship play-off final after finishing sixth. They lost the final 2-1 to Aston Villa.
On July 4, 2019, Lampard was appointed as the new head coach at his former club Chelsea on a three-year contract, making him the first English manager of the Blues in over two decades. Lampard eventually guided Chelsea to fourth in the Premier League and runners-up to Arsenal in the FA Cup.
However, after a run of two wins in eight Premier League matches, Chelsea dropped to ninth and Lampard was dismissed as manager on January 25, 2021.
Having been out of work for a year, Lampard was appointed manager of struggling Everton on
January 31, 2022.
With one game remaining of the season,
Lampard guided the Toffees to Premier League safety, maintaining their coveted top flight status.
The following season saw the club once again fall into a relegation battle, with a run of only one win in 11 matches leaving the club 19th in the league by January. Lampard was sacked on January 23, 2023, just eight days less than a year into the job
On April 6, 2023, Lampard returned to Chelsea as caretaker-manager, but the Blues’ form dropped after he took over. He achieved just one win in his 11 matches.
So there you have it - history suggests that if you were a top goalscorer for England then you fail to achieve success in a managerial role. I’ll watch with interest if Rooney, Lampard or even Kane further down the line can turn the tables in the future.
