BANK to normal after the Bank Holiday, with 734 Cattle and 2,395 Sheep. A decent entry of 353 Store & Breeding Cattle, new buyers and trade the strongest we have seen for some time.

Strs £1,270, Hfrs to £1,230 and Feeding Bulls £900. Cow and Calf outfits a mixed sample with the best on offer to £1,120.

129 Finished Cattle also generated their share of highlights with examples at 235p and £1,441 per head. The 43 Steers averaged a solid 190.6 pence giving a good indication of price levels.

OTM and Feeding Cows out in force with a total of 140 on sale. The best to 170p and £1,358, to average 124.3p.

A good show of 114 Calves with plenty of comments about the very brisk trade, Bulls to £430 and Heifers to £320.

In the Sheep section there were 1,972 Lambs selling on a solid trade with top figures 214p and £110.50 per head. The SQQ and overall averages almost identical at 174.5 and 174.4 respective­ly.

Finally, to Cull Sheep with 410 on offer and a decent trade with Ewes peaking at £133 to average £60.57

138 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – OVERALL AVERAGE 124.3P

A super entry and trade remains very fast. Buyers out in force with Cows pounds dearer than other outlets. Top price was 170p for a young Cow from Dennis Prince, of Ecton.

78 BLACK & WHITE AND EX DAIRY COWS AVE 114.2P

Very, very dear for all sorts. Best sold to 147p for a Shorthorn for R Bassett closely followed at 146,145 (x2), 144 and 143p from Roger Ardern. Geoff Limer had 145p, John Minshall had 143p and Dan Mycock at 143p. Better sold, at 135p plus, Holsteins 120-130p, Leaner sorts 100-115p with plainer sorts generally 85-100p.

A super entry and some lovely quality about for the butchers.

40 Young Bulls ave 175.5p

A good show and quality in abundance with trade holding well. Prices peaked at 211p twice for The Hadfield Family of Castleton, followed by Mark Sweetmore at 210 and 207p. B&W’S sold to 180p (£1047) for SG Potter.

43 Steers – overall average 190.6p

Excellent quality and trade generally improved, Mark Hadfield had a handy Steer at 251p (£1169). Albert Hopkinson sold his at 226p with a lovely run of 8 well-bred Cattle for Brian & Harold Ponsonby, selling to 217p , 216 (x2) etc. 11 Natives saw Angus to 213p and Hereford to 188p.
