BRADNOP WI

-

ON SEPTEMBER 12, June Walker, President, welcomed 24 members and friends to our open meeting. Jackie Poole read the minutes and matters past and present were discussed. Among these were our outing to the Poppies at Middleport Pottery – we really enjoyed the day and we had all ages with us, from grandchildren to grandparents. It was good to see the poppies come back to where they had begun their journey. We all remembered the significance of the poppies.

Our fourth produce show on September 1, was, as usual, good fun and there was healthy competition both in vegetables, flowers and cookery.

The ununusal container was won by George Torr for an arrangement in an old exhaust pipe; Best in Show was won by Joan Clark for an arrangement of garden flowers. The cookery prizes were shared between Gwenneth Turnock and Mabel Green. The children’s prizes went to Maddie Redfern;, Emily and Alice Barker, Sera and Hannah Foy. We thank everyone for entering, the judges for judging – not an easy job – our wonderful organisers June Walker, Jackie Poole and Sheila Knott, plus Irene Ainsworth and Margaret Torr who kept everyone happy with lunch and tea and biscuits in the afternoon. See you next year.

The WI Have a sports week and on September 20 at 7.30pm Bradnop are holding a games evening in the village hall including darts, skittles etc. Bring just enough food for yourselves and a little to share – not too much please.

We have been asked to join Woodcroft in Walking Netball at Brough Park on September 26 and some of our members are interested – ring June for time or just come along.

October 10 is our group meeting at Waterfall, A magician will be telling us some of the tricks of the trade and competitions will be a mask and a paperweight.

We then moved on to the WI dinner on November 17. The menu was distributed – please return when you can. The price is £25.00 including disco. The dress code this year is something poppy related – for both men and women.

The Christmas tree celebration this year is on November 24 and 25. Our tree this year is photos of the WI past and present.

June then introduced Mr David Tideswell, of Radio Derby fame, to talk on garden birds. He is so entertaining and educational, we had a really good night. David said he had never seen such a beautiful and well supported competition with birds of all sorts. The winner was Joyce Alcock, second Christine Tomlinson, and third Diane Richardson. The vote of thanks was given by Diane Richardson. The tea hostesses were Mary Redfern, Sue Montgomery and kitchen helpers.

In other local news, Mabel and Clifford Green hosted a lunch in memory of their precious granddaughter when friends and family met and raised £200 for the air ambulance. There will be a musical evening at the village hall on Friday, October 12 featuring Wetley Rocks Male Voice Choir. Call 382279 for tickets.
