TEAN WI

-

AS WE did not have a meeting in August the meeting started by sharing memories of our visit to Middleport Pottery to see the Poppies, which we all enjoyed. This was then followed by a very enjoyable lunch in Stramshall.

Some of the items that have been made by the craft group over the last few months for sale at the Craft Fayre in Lichfield on October 6 were on display for all to see. Members were reminded about various events coming up throughout September as well as new future events and activities.

Jamie Hall, our speaker for the evening was then introduced. Jamie has a background in jewellery design and became interested in medieval metalwork which tied in very neatly with the Staffordshire Hoard finds.

He gave us an insight into the history of the area where the hoard was found and the possible origins of the gold pieces.

Jamie went on to explain the three methods used for making some of the exquisite pieces, some of which are still used today. Because the pieces found were broken, historians and metalwork craftsmen have been able to dissect the pieces and gain a better insight into how the pieces were crafted.

The magnified photographs were unbelievable and it was difficult to understand how tiny the workings are.

A very interesting and enlightening evening was had by all.

After the vote of thanks refreshments were served and the competition, ‘a piece of gold’, was judged

Tean WI meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Christchurch Hall, Tean. Call Sue on 01538 723409 for further information.
