How I got where I am today...
AFTER passing A levels at Leek High, I knew that University wasn’t for me.
I took an apprenticeship at Howsons accountants in Leek as I liked the idea of work experience alongside qualifications.
I qualified as an accounting technician and went on to complete my ACCA qualifications to become a Chartered Certified Accountant.
I was part of the agriculture and rural business team at Howsons, before moving over to Thompson Wright as a client manager in 2014.
I deal with all manner of businesses, from sole traders to multi-millionpound turnover companies.
I have recently taken on the role of office manager, and I’m very much looking forward to working in Leek again. It’s home turf for me as I live in Waterhouses.
Has the accountant’s role evolved in recent years?
Definitely! Many businesses are looking to use their accounting information on an ongoing basis, not just once a year to calculate their tax liabilities. We are much more involved in assisting clients to obtain funding for business expansion in recent years, whether that’s through grant funding in the local area or liaising with financial and banking contacts to get clients the best deal.
With the introduction of Making Tax Digital next year, we are also in the process of advising, training and assisting clients in moving over to computerised accounting systems.
How do you think the Moorlands economy is shaping up?
The Staffordshire Moorlands has a great and quite unique economy. We have a fantastic mix of rural/ agricultural businesses through to the likes of JCB who have invested a lot of money in the infrastructure of Staffordshire. In Leek, I love the Totally Locally campaign, and firmly stand by the emphasis of using local suppliers and shops and contributing to the local economy.
What do you get out of Chamber membership?
The Chamber offers great support and advice in and around our area to help both me, and my clients. The seminars and networking events are a great way to meet local businesses and pick up advice and information.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
Don’t sweat the small stuff!
