Cattle sale report

A TOTAL entry of 501 store and breeding cattle were on offer with a good company of buyers around the ring and trade continuing to be similar to that seen at recent sales, although some of the second quality wintering cattle were a steadier trade, with farmers continuing to be concerned about the potential fodder situation over the coming winter months.

Breeding Section

A pedigree Simmental cow with a pedigree Simmental heifer calf at foot from P Riley of Meerbrook was very well sold at £1730, with another similar outfit from the same farmer at £1340.

An Aberdeen Angus cow with a Hereford heifer calf at foot from D Doughty of Fulford sold for £1110, with A Blonde D’aquataine cow with a Hereford bull calf at foot from the same farmer exchanging hands for £1050.

Belted Galloway cows from J Elliott of Sheffield sold up to £580 and £570, both with calves at foot, with incalf cows from Mr Hutchins of Sandbach up to £620.

Stock Bulls

A Hereford bull being 51 months old from G P Slack & Son of Great Warford achieved £1130, with a 15 month old pedigree Hereford bull from F J Dean & Son of Timbersbro­ok at £1080 and a pure bred Simmental bull at 17 months old from Messrs Napier of Newton Burgoland at £1100.

Young Bulls

There was a shortage of quality young bulls, with top

price being £580 which was paid for a Cross Bred bull from Mr Ward of Foxt and £550 was paid for a British Blue at 5 months old from S Branson of Gaddesby.

Steers

There were £207 steers on offer, with top price of the day being £1175 which was paid for 26 month old Aberdeen Angus from Robinson Partners of Tattenhill, with another 19 month old Aberdeen Angus from A Woolliscro­ft of Peak Dale at £1130 and a 25 month old Aberdeen Angus from D & A Okill of Siddington exchanging hands for £1095.

A group of three 18 month old Aberdeen Angus from W S Bartram of Grindley sold for £1030, with another group of three 16 month old Aberdeen Angus from the same vendor at £940.

Hereford steers up to 29 months old from B Fallows of Bottomhous­e sold up to £1075, with a 27 month old Hereford from W G & M Myatt of Gratton at £1060.

A pair of named Shorthorn steers being 25 months old from L Allcock of Ipstones achieved £990, with a British Blue steer from M Dodd of Biddulph at £965 being 19 months old.

A 14 month old Simmental from E J Coates of Fenny Bentley at £940 and a group of three Simmentals being 17 months old from Mrs Garratt of Burton on Trent achieved £935 with a 19 month old Simmental from M Dodd at £905.

South Devon steers from D Chadwick of Kniveton sold up to £880, with Black and White steers being 24 months old from D & A Okill at £830.

Younger sorts sold up to £790 for 9 month old Limousin steers from J Braddock of Hulme.

Overall average achieved for steers was £637.06.
