Moorlanders flock to capital for Brexit protest

-

PROTESTERS from the Moorlands joined hundreds of thousands of people on a mass demonstration in London calling for a referendum on the final Brexit deal.

Young voters led the People’s Vote march to London’s Parliament Square, which supporters say attracted more than 600,000 people.

Campaigners boarded a coach at Leek, among 150 coaches which took people to London from all over the country, many of them funded by celebrities.

More campaigners made their own way to London from North Staffordshire.

Elizabeth Baker got on a coach at Macclesfield, which also picked up at Leek, Stone and Stafford. The 61-year-old, from Brown Edge, said: “We had 44 people on our coach and we picked up people throughout Staffordshire.

“The crowd was so big that we were only able to go about as far as Trafalgar Square, there are so many people here. Everyone has been singing and chanting and there have been some interesting banners.

“It is a really friendly atmosphere. People are talking to each other and getting on very well.”

Mike Ottewell, chairman of campaign group Staffs 4 Europe (North), said: “For me and several others who travelled to London, this is a new experience

“We will continue to press the case for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal through high street canvassing and public meetings.”

Many of the marchers had signs bearing slogans like ‘the wrexiteers,’ ‘Brexit stole my future,’ and ‘even Baldrick had a plan.’

Lots of young families joined what has been reported as a ‘good natured and friendly’ march, some with children wrapped in EU flags.

The march was held at the same time as a more low key ‘Save Brexit’ rally in Harrogate, led by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

The British public voted to leave the EU by a margin of 51.89 per cent to 48.11 per cent in a referendum in June 2016.

The UK is scheduled to leave on 29 March 2019, under the terms of the two-year Article 50 process.
