A FAMILY farm is set to become an even bigger Staffordshire tourist attraction after the council gave the green-light to a bid to build a play barn.

Raymond Bower is behind plans to build a playbarn, indoor play and picnic area at Lower Drayton Farm, Penkridge.

He is also planning to build a toilet bloc with a baby change area an pony riding area and a 11 offices by converting or replacing existing agricultural buildings.

Speaking on behalf of the applicant Andrew Wolfe, of the National Farm Attractions Network, said the venture would help educate children on the environment.

He said: “Lower Drayton is the perfect location for a high quality farm park. This can be a business which Staffordshire can be proud.

“It is supported by a comprehensive business plan. My experience suggests that a good proportion of the new jobs would by people aged 16-25, local people who find it difficult to get stable employment.

“The Bowers are passionate about farming, securing the environment and educating consumers.”

At Tuesday’s meeting of the planning committee South Staffordshire Councillors voted in favour of the plans.

Councillor Isabel Ford supported the application and said it would improve the site.

She said: “I have no objections. In fact I welcome it, the site badly needs refreshment and the applicant has gone to a lot of trouble to try and make it more acceptable. Its going to enhance the area.”

This was echoed by councillor Peter Lever, who said the scheme would give families more to do.

He added: “Farmers need more channels of income. It should be welcome with the new houses being built in the area will need more entertainment and this will be welcome.”
