Clowes gets team off mark

-

LEEK Ladies Hockey Club picked up their first points of the season as they won 2-1 at home to Sutton Coldfield.

Leek opened the scoring after Sutton Coldfield failed to capitalise on a number of early chances.

A skillful run by Hazel Mycock set up Jenny Evans to score her first goal of the season.

Sutton equalised a few minutes before half time to set up a cagey second half where Leek created a number of chances on the break.

Leek won a short corner which was subsequently converted by Emma Clowes giving the Ladies the lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Leek goalkeeper Claire Alcock made a number of impressive and important saves to maintain Leek’s lead and earn her the man of the match.

■ LEEK’S men’s team looked for a change of fortune after a tough loss away from home the previous week, and drew

2-2 at home to Stourport.

Stourport were going to be no push over having made a few new signings since last season reinforcing their promotion hopes.

Leek started stronger of the two sides but didn’t make the most of the pressure and failed to score.

Stourpourt were gifted a flick, which was well saved by Adam Knott in the leek goal to keep the stalemate.

But a few minutes later the visitors’ counter attack found the opener and broke the deadlock.

At the start of the second half, Leek put the pressure on, and the hard work paid off when Will Hebditch slipped Ollie Astle through on goal, and he calmly finished.

Leek continued the pressure, but were caught against the run of play and went behind again.

With the final few minutes of play left, Noah Plowman – who had been quiet for the majority of the game – won a short corner.

The ball was injected out by Bobby Dawson and slipped right to Nath Smith, whose shot was saved upwards and then deflected in by Charlie Thackstone.
