Records tumble for Bott and Blues in FA Trophy triumph

-

LEEK Town’s 5-2 victory in the Buildbase FA Trophy against Loughborough Dynamo set or equalled a number of records.

Five is the highest number of goals Leek have ever scored in an away tie in the Trophy.

It also equals their highest ever tally in any FA Trophy match along with the 5-2 victory over Bedworth United in 2014/15 and the 5-5 draw against Wycombe Wanderers way back in 1985/86.

Aaron Bott’s hat-trick was the first by any Blues player in the FA Trophy since Martyn Smith’s treble against Runcorn in January 1992 – before Bott was even born.

The striker has now hit two hattricks this season, accounting for all his six goals for Blues so far.

Already only Tim Grice (six) and Dave Sutton and Dave Whittaker (three each) have hit more hat-tricks in their Leek Town careers.

Meanwhile, progress in the Trophy means at least two more cup ties this week with the first qualifying round tie at Stamford following last night’s Integro Cup match at home to Newcastle Town.

Our next scheduled league game is away at Radcliffe on October 30, but a win over Newcastle will mean another Integro Cup tie against Runcorn Linnets that night or if Saturday’s match against Stamford is drawn then there will be a replay in the Trophy instead.

All of which makes it likely the club may not play another league match this month leaving them with only eight league games played so far this season. By time the Stamford game is played, nine out of the last 13 games will have been in various cup competitions.

Blues hold another of their very popular Sportsman’s Evenings on Friday, November 30, 7pm in the Social Club. The guest speaker is former goalkeeper Mark Crossley (pictured) who made well over 500 appearances in the professional game.

Mark is best known for the decade or so he played for Nottingham Forest, where he served under legendary manager Brian Clough.

He then went on play for Middlesbrough, Fulham and Oldham Athletic and also had an impressive spell on loan at Stoke City. Mark also played international football for Wales despite being born and bred in Barnsley.

Mark is an up and coming speaker on the circuit and comes highly recommended not least for his spoton impression of Cloughie and the many tales he recounts of working under the great man.

There will also be full support from comedian Rudi West and the price, which includes a meal, is £25 per person.

Anyone interested in attending or taking a table can contact the club at leektown@hotmail.com or call 07792 545499.
