‘Bring back the role of church warden’

- Frank Bradbury Calton and Leek

THE church is at the centre of every community or is it just an old cliche these days?

The present campaign to hear the voice of the younger generation needs maintaining and the best way to do this is bring back the power of the past church warden.

An article in the Post & Times some months ago explained the benefits of yesteryear thinking, with the past church wardens being in the centre of every community advising the then vicar of issues that needed addressing.

This system apparently worked very well, unlike our present parish council that sits 12 times a year with the same opted-on cronies that haven’t the power of a one-legged horse, who have to take orders from a couple of people based at Stafford that couldn’t care a monkey’s what is going on out in the countryside or even in our local town.

In Waterhouses I have witnessed over the years, what I would describe as atrocious carrying-ons by the local parish council.

Parking at road junctions, high speed being allowed at busy crossings, footpaths neglected and these issues were mentioned in a letter sent by the parish clerk to Karen Bradley MP a few weeks ago, not to mention the lack of affordable houses in the local villages with the average house price in the village of Calton standing at £450,000.

The answer to this is an age limit on present day church wardens.
