Councillor’s boost for youth sports

Leek Post & Times - - STAFFORDSHIRE MOORLANDS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATE -

THREE junior sport clubs have been given a financial boost by a Leek district councillor.

Bill Cawley has donated £166 each to Leek running, hockey and rugby clubs – all at junior level

Each councillor at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has £500 to spend on community initiatives.

Councillor Cawley chose to divide the £500 into three and give the money to young people engaged in sport.

The hockey club decided to spend the money on eight protective masks for the defenders who are at greatest risk from injury from the ball when struck from corners.

Mr Cawley said: “I am not really a hockey or indeed a rugby player – football and cricket were my sports in my youth – but I realised that it was important to get the fund spent quickly so that young people in Leek could use the money early in the season to best advantage.”

Councillor Bill Cawley is seen presenting the hockey masks to members of the Badgers – Leek Hockey Club’s junior team.
