Lion score seven while Prince of Wales chalk up sixth win

-

GOLDEN Lion made a steady start in the first half hour against Breaks Athletic when the teams met in the Leek and District Sunday League.

But then Craig Hayes cranked up their goal scoring machine by smashing home a volley from 20 yards.

Aaron Walker doubled up five minutes later from close range with Mike Harrison heading in to make it three in the 40th minute.

Adrian Findlow gave

Breaks hope by reducing the deficit just before the interval. Substitute Scott Dixon made his mark in the second half with a quickfire brace (70 and 72). Sean Buck added another with a bullet header from a corner and Tom Bowen finished off the game to make it 7-1. Prince of Wales made it six wins out of six by beating AFC Wellington 6-0.

Jamie Pope opened the scoring in the 25th minute, with Ben Venables following up five minutes later. Sam Wainwright and Jake Gordon added one apiece before the break. Venables completed his brace on the hour mark and Tommy Coates (74) had the final say. Vale Hoppers turned out an understrength side against Buxton Stags who have made a decent start to their first season.

Hoppers played well for the first quarter-hour, but were taken by surprise as Buxton took a quick free-kick and two passes later Jack Gregory (17) found the net. Hoppers’ heads dropped and Pete Richardson (20) doubled Stags’ score from another free-kick. Hoppers picked themselves up, creating a few opportunities without success only for Joe Burgess (40) to score from the spot with Will Francis adding another on the stroke of half-time. Hoppers settled down in the second half, but were taken by surprise once more as Stags took a quick throw which resulted in Joe Burgess

(76) netting his second, with Connor Johnson (87) making it six late on to move Buxton up to third place. There was a cracking finish to the game between Breaks FC and Bulls Head at Birchall. Simon Connor gave the visitors the lead half-way through the first half. Sean Whitehurst doubled up on the hour mark and it looked as if Bulls Head had the game sewn up.

However, Breaks made a late recovery as Guy Johnson (73) pulled one back and Edward Chapman (86) levelled. Matt Shone was the hero as he grabbed the points for Breaks with two minutes remaining.
