Lights fantastic as event is set to draw in crowds

THOUSANDS of people are expected to flock into the centre of Leek this Friday, November 16.

The evening will mark the start of the town’s festive season with the switch on of the Christmas lights.

The vindaloo team from Leek TV will lead the parade from Moorlands House at 6.30pm, followed by the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Roy Tomkinson and his wife Pat, along with Santa, the Buxton Billerette­s, carnival queens, Pantomime Dames and the 2nd Leek Scout Band.

Councillor Tomkinson said: “This year all accompanie­d children who join the parade in fancy dress will receive a free selection box.

“There will be 40 Totally Locally stalls selling festive gifts and we’ve got a fantastic stage line up with tribute act Diva Mix, local singing duo Smile and Leek Salvation Army band will lead the Carols.”

Chairman of the town council’s events committee, Councillor Gail Lockett, said: “New for this year will be a giant snow globe in Market Street where you can have your photo taken with family and friends.

“Moorlands Radio will compere the event.

“John Collins’ fun fair will be in town and community groups will be busy fundraisin­g.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers from the events team, Docksey’s for the loan of the trailer stage and Leek Rotary for providing Santa’s vehicle.”

Leek Salvation Army will lead the Carols.
