Poppy petal pupils dress as evacuees

PUPILS dressed as war-time evacuees to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

On Friday of last week, St Edward’s CE Academy

Cheddleton held a Remembrance Service at St Edward’s Church to mark 100 years since the end of World War One and to remember all those who gave their lives during the conflict.

The school choir, above, performed a war song medley dressed as evacuees. Every child had made a poppy in school to wear during the service.

Sue Machin, principal of the academy, said: “I am proud of the staff and their drive to teach about, recognise and respect such an important milestone.

“The service – and the teaching and learning in school – are further examples of the strong Christian values and ethos at St Edward’s Academy.”

Reverend Diane Oliver said: “The service was so very meaningful. Forty-seven poppy petals were distributed among the children. Each petal bore the name of someone from Cheddleton who has died serving our country. The children then made the petals into poppies. These are now displayed in church.

“During the service we thought about the importance of dialogue and friendship rather than fighting and war.

“Pupils wrote beautiful and moving prayers about peace. We look to the day when nation will no longer take up sword against nation, neither will they train for war anymore and that peace will reign.”
