County cup progress for Breaks and Wellington

-

TWO of the four teams Leek and District Sunday League teams playing in the Staffs FA Sam Kimberley Trophy made it through to the second round.

Breaks United notched up their first win of the season by beating AFC Ipstones from Division Two of the Uttoxeter League by the odd goal in three at Birchall.

In a hard-fought battle, Ipstones took the lead on 37 minutes when Richie Goldstraw rounded the keeper and tapped home.

Breaks had a big shake up at half-time and they got back into the game on 57 minutes when Jenson Gordon bundled the ball into the net from a James Carter long throw.

Breaks scored the decider 10 minutes later as Ipstones shipped an own goal from a corner.

Close by, AFC Wellington had a comfortable 4-1 win over AFC Click from the Potteries/city Traders League Division Two.

Jack Day (11) scored an early opener for the Wellie and then the game settled down until the 40th minute when a great cross from Nathan Ferns resulted in a diving header from Benji Rooke, but Click reduced the deficit just before the break.

Half way through the second half, Pete Bassett scored a great goal from outside the box which flew into the bottom right corner and Jack Day (79) rounded the game off with a burst of pace past their defenders for an easy tap-in.

Waterhouses made a good start against Coors Division Four leaders Halmerend FC with goals from Gavin Hargreaves (5) and Jake Binns (25), and looked comfortable at the break despite Cal Middleton (40) pulling a goal back. It was downhill in the second half as Waterhouses were reduced to 10 men, then conceded an own goal in the 67th minute with Connor Jones (71) grabbing the winner for Halmerend with 20 minutes to go.

Breaks Athletic travelled to FC Gardeners who sit second in the Coors Division Four.

The home team were well on top in the first half with goals from Josh Ryder (12), Nathan Chesworth (8 and 35), Ben Matthews (38) and Simon Parry (43).

Athletic defended better for a while after the restart, but Ryan Lovatt added a single on the hour and Ryder completed his brace 10 minutes later. Miles Chadwick got a consolation with 10 minutes remaining.

Prince of Wales keep up the pressure on league leaders Golden Lion, hitting half-adozen away to Bulls Head without reply.

Bulls Head were soon on the back foot giving away two penalties and a free-kick in the first 20 minutes.

Greg Johnson (7 and 13) converted from the spot and Jamie Pointon (17) hit a brilliant free-kick, his seventh of the season for Prince.

Bulls Head sorted out their defence and kept Prince out for the next 45 minutes, but Pointon (63) scored his second and Johnson (75 and 88) doubled his tally to complete the rout.

It was also a one-sided affair as Buxton Stags entertained Breaks FC.

Stags were two up in 10 minutes with goals from Zak Heywood (6) and Pete Richardson (10).

Joe Burgess (22 and 35) hit a brace either side of a Rick Carr (31) single to give Stags a comfortable five goal lead at the interval. Breaks dug in for a while, but Gary Tait (65) and another brace from Burgess (70 and 82) added to their misery.
