A SEASONAL entry of stock this week with a good selection in all sections.

A good show of lambs and ewes forward with trade much firmer on the week with an overall SQQ average of 174p/ kg. Top prices of 200p/kg and £97.92/head. Ewes were also a firm trade, with rams to £116 and ewes to £95.

A strong entry of dairies but trade easier on the week, with the second and third quality sorts proving harder to sell. A Pedigree Limousin bull realised £1,660 with dairy heifers to £1610.

More barrens about this week, but trade slightly back on the week, and not many real meated sorts on offer. Top price of 125p/ kg for a Hereford. Clean were in short supply but a fab Limousin heifer from Mark Butler sold to 213p/kg.

Pigs continue to sell well with a top of 130p/kg for pork and cutting pigs with a top headage price of £125.45.

Calves saw an improved trade for the best sorts with continenta­l bulls much firmer. Top price of £425 for a Blue bull calf and £265 for a Limousin heifer calf.

BARREN COWS (62);

Better numbers this week, with trade slightly steadier this week with more plainer sorts about this week.

Top price today of 125p/kg for a 730kg Hereford from G W Mycock & Son. A 615kg Friesian from R cooper, Congleton realised 113p/kg with a 615kg Friesian at 110p/kg for B D Hudson, Ipstones.

Overall average of 86.64p/kg or £561.30 per head.

Top headage price of £912.50 for the Hereford from G W Mycock with black & whites at £838.30 and £818.55.

An overage Limousin steer from G W Mycock & Son at 655kg realised 158p/kg or £1034.90.

CLEAN CATTLE (14);

Similar numbers and a similar trade. A neat Limousin heifer at 490kg realised 213p/kg from Mark Butler, Bagnall sold to P Lymer of J W Ash Butchers, Leek.

Other heifers sold to 181p/ kg for a 580kg Blue from J R Johnson of Ipstones with a 665kg Bazadaise from Mrs P Mitchell, Brown Lees at 180p/kg who also for a 585kg Bazadaise at 170p/kg. A 475kg Limousin heifer from R Moss, Abbotts Bromley realised 172p/kg.

Steers sold to 178p/kg for a 455kg Hereford from D L Moss, Rushton with also sold a 440kg Angus at 176p/kg. a 670kg Hereford sold at 169p/kg for J W Brandrick & Son, Fole.

A 675kg Simmental bull realised 188p/kg from Rushton Spencer.

Top headage prices of £1240.20 for steers, £1197 for heifers and £1269 for bulls.

Another strong entry today at Leek including a Pedigree Limousin Stock Bull at £1660 from the Clarke family of Sheffield.

Trade was back on the last week, with buyers more choosy, perhaps reflecting the general change in weather conditions and cattle coming in. As always anything with plenty of milk sold well, with the less milkier types proving harder to move.

Topping the day was the Bodycote family of Leicester for a 25kg heifer at £1610, they also had a second to £1600.

Messrs Easom of Alfreton also had a heifer to £1600.

Similar numbers again and a good solid trade throughout. Pork pigs sold to 130p/kg for 74.5kg pigs from J & B Fentem with a 68kg pig at 124p/kg from the same home.

Cutting pigs sold to 130p/kg for 83.5kg pigs from the Fentems who sold others to 126p/kg for 80kg and 79kg pigs and 122p/kg for 80kg pigs.

Bacon pigs sold to 128p/kg for 95.6kg pigs from R Wilson, Oldham and also for 93kg pigs from J & B Fentem. 86.5kg pigs from J Davenport, Gawsworth realised 124p/kg and 124p/kg for 90kg pigs from J & B Fentem.

Heavier pigs sold to 116p/kg for 105.6kg pigs from R Wilson with 104.5kg pigs at 112p/kg from J & B Fentem and 104.6kg pigs from Chris Hine at 110p/kg.

Cull sows sold to 62p/kg for a 265kg pigs from MC & EA Beattie, Allostock who also sold a 282kg sow at 60p/kg with a 311kg sow also realising 60p/kg for R Wilson, Oldham.

A breeding boar from MC & EA Beattie realised £250. Weaners sold at £24 per head for A Worth, Marton and £15 per head for 5 store pigs from CL & R Holton.

LAMBS (801);

A seasonal entry sold on a firmer trade generally with good demand for the best sorts to a top of 200p/kg for 42kg lambs from David Elliott of Tideswell with plenty of other pens over 190p/kg.

Average types seemed to be vary greatly depending on size and finish.
