PUPILS WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE DISPLAY

-

STAFF, children and the local community at Beresford Memorial School in Leek have been working hard to put together a wonderful commemoration for the Centenary of the end of the First World War.

Lorna Tatton subject leader for RE and Art, first had the idea back in the summer term.

She said: “It was important for me to commemorate the World War One centenary with the school and local community. And what better way than to include stories and photographs from local residents together with brilliant artwork created by the children and staff?”

The work began in the Summer term as part of the transition work, where children went to their new classes and made various different poppies.

This varied from paintings, drawings, colleges, mosaics, 3D work and prayer bunting.

Mrs Tatton said: “It was important for me that young children know the sacrifices that have been made and that we continue to remember, not only veterans from the Great War, but also servicemen and women who have served since and say thank you to them.”

The school carried on with the World War One theme into the Autumn term, where years three and four visited Middleport Pottery and saw the Weeping Window.

On return to school, they created more artwork and poems, entering into various WW1 commemorative competitions and also being part of other collaborative creations including Lichfield Cathedral’s 20,000 dove’s exhibition.

A Christmas exhibition where each dove has been hand decorated with images or messages of peace.
