‘Events such as these are the future of our markets’
A STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands town is set to hold a Christmas Twilight Market.
The market, co-ordinated by the district council, is set to take place in Leek between 6pm and 9pm on Friday December 7.
The event, which will be held in the town’s Butter and Trestle Markets and follows the successful Christmas Lights Switch-on, will feature stalls selling traditional seasonal gifts - as well as street food and a licenced bar.
There will also be Christmas craft activities courtesy of Cabbage Rose, live music by Leek band the Deadbeat Damsels and Santa himself is set to be making an appearance.
Councillor Edwin Wain, Cabinet Member for Planning, Development and Property,
said: “Our markets are going from strength to strength which is great news for shoppers and traders and our local economy.
“We are all keen to develop the potential markets have to continue to contribute to vibrant and thriving town centres so we’re excited by our latest initiative - the Christmas Twilight Market.
“It promises to be a lively, social event blending shopping and socialising and we’re all very much looking forward to it. Events such as this are the future for our markets so I hope everyone comes along and supports their local traders while having a great evening.
“The idea is that we hold more events like this during the summer months next year so we are urging people to join us to make this market the first of many more to come.”
Earlier this month the Post & Times reported how both Leek and Cheadle markets had seen an increase in the number of traders and stalls. A Staffordshire Moorlands District Council spokeswoman added: “It follows a strong performance for the town’s markets which has seen the number of stalls on the Wednesday indoor market increase by over 200. The outdoor market has seen a similar increase and the number to traders taking stalls in the Friday Trestle market has grown by over 40. The Fine Food market is also continuing to attract an increasing number of traders with over 100 regular attenders.”
There is free parking on Staffordshire Moorlands District Council car parks from 3.30pm.
The council has also announced free parking on council-owned car parks in the town on December 1, December 8, December 15 and December 22.
Free parking is also available in both Biddulph and Cheadle on selected days over the coming month.
