NEW Year’s Day sale saw a quieter day but a good trade for those who came along.

Lambs were a brisk trade and overall average of 201p/kg with a top of 228p/ kg for 43.7kg lambs and top headage of £110.25.

A small entry of barrens saw a strong trade with a top of 127p/kg and clean to 136p/kg.

A very nice show of dairies and those who came along were well rewarded with a top of £1700.

A good show of pigs today and new vendors on the scene with a top of 128p/kg for bacon pigs.

Calves were in short supply but better quality sold to £320 for a Blue bull calf from G W Myatt, Endon.

Only 5 forward but a good trade for the stock. Top price of 127p/kg for a 720kg Holstein from BP & JR Needham, Heaton with a 835kg Holstein at 120p/kg for D & G Tudor, Kingsley who sold another at 116p/ kg for a 730kg Holstein.

Peter Gilman sold two with one at 114p/kg for a 820kg Holstein and 80p/kg for a 530kg Holstein.

Top headage price of £1002 for Tudor’s 835kg Holstein and others at £934.80 and £914.40.

CLEAN CATTLE;

Just one heifer in today at 136p/kg for a 495kg Hereford from D Gee, Rudyard.

A smart little New Years Day entry with a ring full of buyers and the vendors going home well rewarded.

Top call of £1700 for a smart Pedigree heifer from the Ball family of Smallwood with Rob Phillips and family close behind at £1690 twice for a Bentygrang­e second calver and a newly calved heifer.

The top 5 averaged an excellent £1674 per head. Numerous vendors ringing in with entries for next week. A happy new year to one and all!

A very good show of pigs today and trade similar to that of previous weeks.

Pork pigs topped at 116p/kg for a 73kg pig from BT & VE Elkin who sold others at 114p/kg for 62kg and 64kg pigs and 112p/ kg for 58kg pigs.

Cutting pigs sold 126p/kg for an 83kg pig from J & B Fentem with others at 124p/kg for 81kg and 122p/kg for 80kg pigs from the same vendor.

Bacon pigs sold to 128p/kg for 95kg pigs from J & B Fentem with others at 126p/kg twice for 96kg and 85kg pigs with 124p/kg for 90.6kg pigs from BT & VE Elkin.

Heavy pigs sold to 110p/kg for 113kg pigs from Chris Hine and 104p/kg for 107kg pig from the same home.

BUTCHERS LAMBS (674);

A tidy entry for New Years Day sold on a brisk trade from start to finish with vendors being well rewarded for their efforts. The average coming in at 201p/kg is 20p/kg up on the equivalent market 12 months ago. Many more could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

Best sorts regularly at 215p and above to a top of 228p/kg for 43.7kg lambs from Keith Minshull of Bosley who sold others at 226p/kg. Big lambs a firmer trade to 225p/ kg for 49kg from Roger & Simon Bailey to gross £110.25. Plenty of other lambs £100 per head and better.

A small entry sold on a solid trade to a top of £112/head for best Texel’s with others over £100/head. Heavy ewes generally £80 and above but mules a fraction harder to sell than in previous weeks.

Overall average of £54/head which included a very mixed sample.
