Swann is the goal hero for Waterhouses in cup victory

-

WATERHOUSES had a tough first round tie in the Leek and District League’s JW Howson League Cup away to the holders Golden Lion at Windmill Street and it turned out to be a seven-goal thriller.

Favorites Lion roared into a two-goal lead inside 10 minutes through Jordan Lomas and Tom Bowey.

However, Martin Hudson reduced the arrears by the half-hour and Adam Taylor levelled five minutes before the break. Waterhouses were the first to strike 20 minutes into the second half through Tom Swann, only for Lion to respond soon afterwards as Aaron Walker scored from a corner.

Tom Swann was the hero for Waterhouses by hitting the winner with seconds to go.

In another first-round tie, Prince of Wales scored eight against AFC Wellington without reply. Greg Johnston (7) was first to score with Edwin Ellis (20, 31 and 34) bagging a hat-trick.

Jamie Pope scored halfway through the second half, followed by a Jamie Pointon (70) penalty. Dan Lawlor (87) and Kirk Buxton (89) rounded off the romp.

The Wellington keeper was on good form with many decent saves, the best to deny Ellis from the spot

Buxton Stags are through to the semi-finals of the Derbyshire Sunday Junior Cup with a fine away win to The Gate Inn who are third in the fourth tier of the Chesterfield and District League.

The Stags started sluggishly and were a goal down in 15 minutes, but they quickly responded as Peter Richardson equalised three minutes later after good work from Dan Gillbride.

Stags conceded a second by the half-hour after some sloppy play, but rallied back to level again just before the interval.

Liam Sircar gave the Stags the lead with a cool finish on 65 after a neat interchange with Callum Burns, but The Gate fought back with a back-post header in the 74th minute. The game was heading to extratime until Gillbride was fouled in the box and he stepped up to convert the penalty on 89 minutes to send The Stags into the semi-final.

In the League, Breaks Athletic had a tough away day at Vale Hoppers conceding a dozen without reply. Zak Oakes (5) was first on the scoresheet with a volley, followed by Jordan Morris (10) heading home from close range.

Gary Barnes (20) halfvolleyed the third from the edge of the box and Morris (35 and 40) completed his hattrick by half-time. Matt Benaccom (46) continued after the break and Oakes (55, 70 and 75) was the top scorer with three more. Barnes completed his brace on the hour with James Greener (80) and Matt Dale (90) completing the rout.

Dyers Arms met Bulls Head at Birchall. Kieran Millward (15) opened for Dyers and they were three up by the halfhour through Elliot Knot and Declan Heath.

Bulls Head were better organised after the break and Ryan Cotterill pulled one back on the hour, but Dyers stepped up in the last quarter-hour with goals from Liam Davies (75) and Adam Stubbs (80).

Struggling Breaks United have folded and their results have been removed from the table.
