BROWN EDGE WI

-

ON WEDNESDAY, January 9, Brown Edge WI. were gathering for the first meeting of the New Year.

Pleased to be meeting again after the Christmas break, members were eagerly catching up on each other’s news, before settling down to hear President Barbara Cordon’s welcome, in which she was delighted to once again include a visitor.

Thanks were conveyed to Julie and Sheila who had arranged the Christmas Meal, at Egos restaurant, which we all enjoyed as a fitting end to 2018.

Drawing our attention to the newsletter which secretary Julie Holdcroft had prepared, we were urged to add our names to the lists being passed around for the following Cornerstone News Publication, the Centenary Spring Council Meeting and the Supporters’ Club, to enable Julie to make the necessary bookings.

Other items of note were a chance to see the replica of the Bayeux Tapestry at Reading Museum, followed by afternoon tea at Denman College on April 27.

The Centenary Homes and Gardens Day is being held on Tuesday, April 16.

The morning speaker will be Sir Richard Fitzherbert with “Tissington Hall, Past and Present”.

The afternoon speaker is Martin Roberts TV presenter of Property Programmes and journalist. For further details contact Julie.

So-sew WI are the hostesses at the forthcoming Caldon Valley Group Meeting, to be held at Penkhull Village Hall, Trent Valley Rd on Wednesday, April 10, 7.309.30pm. The speaker will be Angela Smith, the first female professional squash player, who has never forgotten her roots in Stoke on Trent.

Refreshments will be a fish and chip supper with tea and coffee.

Several members have volunteered to enter the competitions on this evening, which are:

Craft – A door stop made by yourself and from “upcycled materials”. The size is “fit for purpose” and a display card detailing the upcycled fabric used, placed at the front.

Cookery – 5 Empire Biscuits, for which Julie has the recipe, to be displayed on a plate.

The programme was listed as “A Social Evening”, and how pleasant to take a step back from the usual format of having a speaker and enjoy the company of members who make up the Brown Edge WI.

Always a good atmosphere with our friendly group and a chance to have a laugh as we struggle to solve the quizzes set by our president. At the first look, these quizzes looked to be easy, but in actual fact caused more brain testing and more laughter as members struggled to solve them in the time allowed.

After the answers had been revealed, there was many a cry of “of course it is”, or “oh didn’t know that”, but members were rewarded with homemade mince pies to go with our tea, Before we made our way home, we learned that the door raffle was won by Mandy Tooth.

We meet again on Wednesday, February 6 at 7.15pm when we will welcome

Mrs Michelle Cliffe, with her talk “The Lunatics” (Josiah Wedgwood and the Lunar Society).

A piece of Wedgwood is the competition. So sort out your favourite piece of Wedgwood and come and enjoy the evening with us. We make all our visitors welcome.
