CHEDDLETON WI

-

ON a very pleasant summer evening there was a crocodile of cars making their way to Black House Farm, Horton for the annual July outing.

We were met by an old friend of many Ann James, who welcomed everyone and invited them to wander round her lovely garden.

There were many surprises around each bend. Sculptured animals from greenery appear among the many flowers and trees. In a pond there were large golden coloured carp.

A very dignified peacock strutted around the garden letting everyone know he was there with his piercing cries.

After spending time sitting and chatting and looking at the beautiful views we went inside to find a very inviting supper, a welcome cup of tea and homemade cakes.

Mal thanked Ann for allowing us to visit her lovely garden. Ann then raffled the flower decorations that were on the tables which she had made with flowers from her garden.

Continuing with the flower theme Augusts’ meeting saw Sylvia Newhall come along to give a demonstration of flower arranging. Whilst doing the arrangements Sylvia entertained members with her humorous anecdotes about judging at flower shows and buying flowers at wholesalers.

She made seven displays using flowers easily available and gave many hints on how to try and achieve these by the members themselves. She gave all the arrangements to be raffled.

Mal thanked Sylvia for such an interesting and colourful evening and for allowing members to take away the arrangements.

Mal reminded members of the forthcoming group meeting to be held in Ashcombe Park Cricket Club on October 17.

Chris Carter is organising a fashion show on November 22 to boost group funds. She is looking for models, any volunteers?

The evening ended with a cup of tea and special biscuits provided by Mal as it was her birthday.

Other birthday ladies for the month were Lynda, Janet and Irene. A ‘happy birthday’ was sung to all.

Sylvia judged the competition for a dried flower arrangement which was won by Fran.

The next meeting will be on September 3 at Cheddleton Community Centre at 7.30pm.

The speaker will be Nettie Cook on “My Work as a Conservator”. For more information about Cheddleton WI contact Mal on 01538 360774.
