FUN RUN IN THE SUN
DESPITE the indifferent weather seen at many Moorlands shows this year, the sun finally shone on the annual Ipstones five-mile road race and gala day on Saturday.
The main race attracted a good turnout of competitors from across several counties.
The day was opened by the newly elected Ipstones Agricultural Queen, Ellie-mae Hallam.
She told the crowd: “I would like to welcome you all to the Ipstones Road Race. I hope the weather is kind to us and that all runners enjoy their race and finish them safely.
“I would like to thank Ken Rushton and his colleagues without whom today would not be happening. Their expertise will ensure the day runs smoothly and thank you to the runners and your families for supporting this popular event.”
Winner of the main five mile road race was Martin Dawson of North Derbyshire in a time of 27 minutes 33 seconds; second was Carl Moulton in 28.34 and third was David Bethell in a time of 30.06. David also took the prize for the first local runner in the race.
The first woman was Louise Hackett of Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletic Club in a time of 33 minutes 12 seconds; second was Katie Latham of South Cheshire in 33.27 and third was Nia Noakes of Stone in 34.27.
The one mile junior race was won for the second year running by Sienna Phillips of Ipstones in a time of six minutes 14 seconds.
Sienna made history last year when she was the first girl to win the race. The first boy was Jake Malyon in six minutes 28 seconds.
Leek High School student Sienna, who runs for her school and is a member of Buxton Athletic Club, said the race was hard, but she was very happy to win it two years in succession.
Race organiser Ken Rushton said the event had made a brilliant day.
He said: “This is one of the longest running events in the North Staffordshire running diary. It started in 1978 in Church Lane and went from the old fire station. It then moved to the new fire station, but we are now back in the original venue in Church Lane. I would like to thank everyone who took part and also to everyone who has helped.”
During the day their were several stalls, refreshments and musical entertainment which was provided by The City Member skiffle band.
