THE sun shone for a communityspirited event held in Leek on Saturday.

The 12th Action West End Family Fun Day took place at its regular venue of Westwood Road Recreational Grounds.

Hundreds of families attended the extravaganza to enjoy all the different activities which were on offer.

Chairman of Action West End resident’s group, Belinda Hargreaves, said: “This year’s event was the best turn out yet for our annual family fun day.

“There were lots of smiley faces enjoying the array of activities we had on offer from the fun dog show, fairground rides, teddy drop game, music, tombola and raffle, to name but a few.

“We also had many fellow community groups and organisations in attendance hosting stalls to raise funds for, and awareness of, their own causes.

“I would like to sincerely thank all our wonderful dedicated volunteers of Action West End, along with everyone else who helps make the annual event possible every year.

“Thanks to Leek Town Crier Bill Lomas and Leek Town Mayor Sue Coleman for their attendance and also for, between them, handing out the prizes for the dog show.

“Thanks also go to Nicky Clowes and Eileen Mcgrath for taking on the difficult roles of being the judges for our Dougal’s Den sponsored dog show which had record entries of more than 30 pooches this year.

“We would also like to thank Mike Gledhill for doing a wonderful set of live music for us, all those businesses and individuals who donated prizes for our tombola and raffle, and everyone who turned out to support and enjoy the fun day. The only event of its kind in the West End of Leek.” Action West End was set up to enhance recreation and play in the West End of Leek. It meets every other month at the Leek Bowling Club, off Beggars Lane.

The next meeting is tonight, Wednesday, September 11, at 6pm.

Belinda added: “Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings. We not only plan for our annual fun day but also discuss any issues arising in our area with police representatives and local councillors.”
