-

A VERY full house at Bakewell with 998 Cattle and 2,324 Sheep on offer for the catch up market following the Bank Holiday week.

The Cattle trade looked good with a total of 601 Store and Breeding Cattle reaching top figures as follows, Steers £1,260, Heifers £1,060, Feeding Bulls £825, Cow & Calf outfits £1,480 and Stock Bulls £1,800.

There were 132 Finished Cattle on offer reaching 230p and £1,434. The overall trade was distinctly better and the 64 Heifers averaged a very creditable 190.7p, the best figure we have seen for some time.

128 OTM and Feeding Cows this week with the trade remaining similar. Top figures 172p and £1,523 with the average looking good at 117.9p

In the Calf section the entry numbered 137 head and clearly well received with Bulls to £390 and Heifers £365.

The Sheep section was busy with producers marketing Lambs possibly ahead of Fridays Theave Sale which would prevent them selling Lambs next Monday.

The Lamb trade was good for the best but harder work for the also rans.

Top figures 229p and £102.96 the SSQ average £61.16

128 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – overall average 117.97p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles) A good entry of Cows again with 67 Vendors buying cattle today and selling to an everincreasing number of buyers at ringside. 17

different accounts today tells its own story. True competition from firms that want your cows. Have you got some to sell? Bakewell can handle the numbers and have the trade to prove it! Best today sold today to 172p for a clean Heifer (32 mnths) with best Cows up to 171p for a pure Limousin from Robert Hardy to gross at £1251. As always feeding buyers out in force with plenty of Cows today being kept to improve.

53 Black & White and ex dairy cows ave 106.1p A good price for the meat with a clean Heifer (31 mnths) selling at 144p with best Cows well over 130p. Good Holsteins 115-125p, leaner sorts 100-12p and a few plain sorts under 90p

132 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 179.6p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A grand entry of Cattle with 47 different vendors selling to 21 accounts today. Trade generally better all through with some genuine fire around the ring.

37 Young Bulls ave 160.8p/kg

Much better numbers and trade that we have got used to, don’t get me wrong, nowhere near as dear as we have seen them but definitely better. Best Bulls today topped at 198p for a Limousin x from Andrew and Gemma Bland, who also had another at 196p. Messrs Fearn had 194p (£1342) and 170p (£1434) with Mark Ludlam at 191 and 185p.
