WOODCROFT WI
WE BEGAN our August meeting on a sad note, holding a one minute silence for Marion Harley, who sadly died recently. Marion was a longstanding member of our institute who will be greatly missed.
Anne was back in the chair and after welcoming members and guests continued with the evening’s business. Kate Humble is one of the speakers at the annual council meeting on October 15. The county carol service at Lichfield cathedral is on Monday December 2.
Our walking group are heading for Edale on the 15th and film club are off to see the
Lion King, also on the 15th. Coffee club will meet on the 20th and our craft group will be making rolled beeswax candles on the 22nd. Many of us are joining Robin Hood coaches for a trip to Southport and the flower show and we’ll be joining them again for some Christmas shopping in Coventry on November 30.
We’ve had an invitation from Queens of the Moorlands to join their meeting on September 12 when they will be ‘singing for the brain’. We were reminded that walking netball resumes at the leisure centre on September 4.
Dorothy Entwhistle was our speaker and her subject was the history of dolls’ houses. Originally called baby houses in the 16th and 17th centuries, they were first created in cabinets. Most were intended for adults and became a way of flaunting their wealth.
Replicas of homes were made and filled with miniature works of art, probably the most famous is Queen Mary’s doll’s house at Windsor but closer to home in the Potteries museum is a copy of Barlaston Hall.
They have been described as a world to get lost in.
LEEK FLOWER CLUB
OUR August demonstrator, Cynthia Preston-jones, delighted us with ‘Every Picture tells a Story’ and we were privileged to hear her lovely voice accompanying music as she completed her designs.
Her first creation was inspired by the painting ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’ by John Singer Sargent using peach and lime green flowers.
Cynthia was very knowledgeable about the painter and told us a brief history of the picture. She also sang to ‘The Rose’ while completing the arrangement.
Design two was based on the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Sunflowers and agapanthus were used to complement a painting with a mixture of the artist’s work.
Design three – my favourite – was inspired by a lovely picture of Marilyn Monroe using bright red and cerise flowers. The finished design looked lovely – see photo above left.
Cynthia’s last creation was based on ‘Monet’ and was an interpretation of
Monet’s garden at Giverny.
Beautiful lavender and lilac flowers were used to create a lovely basket arrangement.
This evening’s practise class was entitled ‘Panache’ – an elegant design in a low dish for a coffee table.
Our ladies are really improving every month. Our practise class is offered free of charge for members and is an excellent opportunity to learn all about flower arranging with other like minded people. If anyone is interested please feel free to give me a call on the number below.
We have our Annual Meeting in September and following the short we have a special lady from Shropshire who will be creating ‘Summertime’ displays.
Visitors are always welcome – we have admission £7.
If you like it why not ask about becoming a member and join our friendly club where we promote ‘friendship through flowers’.
