PRESIDENT June Walker welcomed 20 members and visitors to our August meeting, Jackie Poole was unwell, Eileen Jones was her deputy, and read the minutes, which is not easy when you have not written them!

June then congratula­ted our new show committee on behalf of us all on their success at Leek Show, where they achieved second overall, Dot Wilson, achieved the highest marks in cookery, star lemon biscuits, 10 and won the trophy, and Carolyn Bradley 9.5 for her drink, so between them, 19.5 out of 20.

Thanks to Andrew Bradley who made the frame for the stand. In the individual categories we also achieved, Sylvia Ball, had third, with her ginger bread, and Gwen Turnock highly commended, Gwen also got highly commended with her photograph­y. Irene Ainsworth got a third with her birthday cake for a child, snakes and ladders cake.

How we enjoyed the Sheen Gardens, and we did meet the hosts afterwards and said they had raised £2,000 over the weekend, but would not be opening again until 2021.

June again reminded us of the Cookery Book for 50 years of the WI at Bradnop in 2020.

June would be pleased to see more recipes either handwritte­n or emailed to her. Gwenneth then gave out the birthdays and wedding anniversar­ies. The Carol Service will be here in Bradnop on Monday, December 2. The Christmas trees festival is the weekend of November 23/24.

Joan Chapel, who at short notice came to show us how to create a buttonhole that did not come apart after a few minutes.

We all enjoyed the night and we are going to use these skills at the WI.

June in thanking Sue and Joan also congranula­ted them both on getting prizes in the Floral Art Marquee at Leek Show where Joan achieved a first prize and Sue a third.

The competitio­n, a button, was won by Carolyn Bradley. The tea hostesses were Danielle Baker, who came with her delightful cream and fruit victoria sponge and Joan Clark and Sheila Knott.

Our afternoon fellowship will be on Friday, September 27 at the home of Mabel and Clifford Green, 2-4pm. A cup of tea and a warm welcome are assured.

Mabel and Clifford are holding a Douglas Macmillan coffee morning at Rose Mount on Friday, September 20 and would be pleased to see you there, 10.30am onwards.

WATERFALL WI

WATERFALL WI held their monthly meeting on August 20. President Margaret Burn welcomed everyone, also Brenda Smith from Jersey.

Apologies from several members were received, followed by the reading of the July’s minutes. Members were told Waterfall WI took three trophies for main display at Leek Show, also the people’s choice, Ellen Poole won the photograph­ic competitio­n and Carole Davies won with her teddy bear cake, also some winning 2nd an 3rd.

Before Rose could read out the county info, she was congratula­ted on winning the county’s singles and doubles bowls competitio­ns.

We will be playing in the county darts again this year.

Funds raised for ACWW this year will go towards maternal and reproducti­ve health.

Our speaker for the evening was David Wilkinson, who told us about the history and architectu­re of castles, churches and houses built in rocks.

We were then tested to see if everyone knew anything about villages and hamlets within a 20-mile radius of Waterfall, from clues.

Members returned teddies for the Mrs Simm’s Cup, also 24 from a friend of Julie Riley.

Best wishes were given to anyone with a birthday or anniversar­y during the month, followed by the raffle which was won by Mary Goldstraw and competitio­n winners of Trentham Tart were 1st Liz Bremmell, 2nd Rose Dyche and 3rd Carole Davies, this was judged by Brenda Smith.
