Mountford and Lockett at the double for Leek Ladies

-

LEEK Ladies continued their great start to the new season in the West Midlands Regional Women’s Premier Division with a 4-0 win over Solihull United Ladies at Harrison Park.

Leek started brightly and pushed Solihull back in the opening minutes with both Katie Gibbons and Michaela Lockett having shots on the Solihull goal but both wide of the target. The first good chance of the game fell to Solihull when the striker found herself one on one with keeper Bethany Cottrell who was quick off her line and made a fine save.

Leek’s passing game was good and Lucy Goodfellow picked out Michaela Lockett on the left and she drove the ball across the keeper inside the far post to put Leek 1-0 up on 14 minutes.

Solihull were awarded a free-kick some 25 yards from the Leek goal and produced a good delivery which Gina Rushton headed clear.

Rhian Morris then found Gibbon’s and she got a great shot away but just over the Solihull crossbar.

Another Solihull set piece and this time Alana Copeland tidied up for the hosts and played the ball out of danger.

Gibbons was again causing trouble for the Solihull defence as she side-stepped an opponent and this time rattled the ball against the bar.

Solihull came out for the second half with purpose and looked for the equaliser, pushing Leek back and the pressure paid off when a lofted free-kick was met with a glancing header which looped over Cottrell.

Leek introduced Liv Mountford with 30 minutes to go and she looked very lively up front. It was Mountford who put Leek back in front after a good move which ended with Rhian Morris finding Mountford who finished well into the top corner from 18 yards.

A few minutes later Lockett worked herself a good chance and got through on goal. Her shot saved by the keeper, but Lockett followed up for her second goal and Leek’s third.

The final goal was the goal of the game with Alana Copeland crossing the ball in from the right and it was met by Mountford on the volley with an unstoppable shot from 12 yards
