‘Do you remember Pomeroy War Memorial Hall in better times?’

-

A MEETING was held at the Duke of York, Pomeroy on October 16 regarding Pomeroy War Memorial Hall.

The Hall, on the main A515 at Pomeroy was built to commemorate those who served

in the First World War and was built by public agreement with contributions from the people of Earl Sterndale Parish and the surrounding community.

The hall was very successful, certainly up until the outbreak of World War Two, but has not been a community hall for many years and is currently used for storage by a local drama group.

The meeting was well attended and amongst those present were past committee members, current and former residents, descendants of the original Trustees plus members of Buxton Drama League, Parish Councils and a local history group.

A special thanks to Helena Stubbs from Rural Action Derbyshire.

The meeting commenced with a history and background of the hall, followed by an update on the current situation from Buxton Drama League and information from Helena who advises on the use of village halls.

We are hoping you can help us find out a little more about Pomeroy War Memorial Hall.

If you have any photos, stories or memories of the hall we would love to hear from you.

Maybe someone you know was involved in the building of the hall,

pictured below, in 1921?

Or maybe they went to the dances or children’s parties at the hall. Were you one of the children who attended Sunday School at Pomeroy?

Perhaps you know about the Home Guard using the Hall in the war.

Have you been to a function or whist drive at Pomeroy Hall?

Do you remember their famous Christmas raffle?

Were you one of the band members who used the hall for music practice?

Whatever your connection with the Hall, no matter when it was or how big or small your involvement, we would love to hear from you.
