THE monthly Pedigree Sale attracted plenty of trade, and customers adhering to the Social Distancing Rules and ‘Drop & Go’ system. Four dairies over £2000 to top at £2020 twice for heifers from the Hollingwor­th family, Ockbrook.

Strong trade for barren cattle with a top price of 137p/kg and plenty over 120p/kg and clean to 197p/kg.

An improved trade again for Spring Lambs with a super entry forward and selling to 314p/kg. Hogget’s still selling well, but less quality about and a top price of 239p/kg. Cull ewe trade continue to sell well, with a top of £144 and the entry averaging £81.67 for a good quality entry.

A fantastic trade again for calves, with plenty of orders for all types and qualities of calves to top at £360 for a Blue bull calf. If you have calves to sell, now is the time!

A better entry and trade very strong throughout!! Topping at 137p/kg twice for a 645kg Limousin from J Beeson, Kingstone, and for a 640kg Simmental from MR Beardmore, Ipstones. A 710kg Hereford realised 136p/kg from J Needham,

Cheddleton, and a 795kg British Blue at 135p/kg from F & J Barlow.

Majority of the entry sold over 110p/kg to average 116.43p/kg overall or £748.51.

Top headage price of £1073.25 for the 795kg British Blue from F & J Barlow, with Holsteins to £1047.80 and £1008.

CLEAN CATTLE (5);

A small entry and trade a bit less in line with the trade nationally at the moment, with a 580kg Limousin heifer topping at 197p/kg from Robert Belfield, Upper Hulme to gross £1142.60.

Steers topped at 147p/kg for a 745kg Hereford from A Turnock & Sons, Horton, with a 490kg Simmental at 146p/kg from CS, JJ & WE Bower, Hollingwor­th.

**Fast Trade with 4 over £2000**

All classes of dairies continue to be strongly sought after at Leek with 4 passing the £2,000 mark on Tuesday.

Topping the day twice over at £2020 was John Hollingwor­th of Ockbrook. Both for heifers, one giving 28kg and another 34kg. his other 3 heifers reached £2000, £1920 and £1840 to average a superb £1960 for the five.

Cows also topped at £2000 for a second calver from Ian Bradburn of Orrell. The entire milking entry averaged a very pleasing £1458.

The special entry of in-calf heifers and youngstock from the Brittleban­ks of Tean attracted a lot of interest with everything selling to a strong trade, particular­ly the cross bred heifers.

In-calf heifers topped at £1570 for a Holstein heifer due in September with a Norwegian x heifer to £1550. The group due July to December averaged £1409. Yearling heifers reached £870 with 6 month old heifers to £550.

Next week we have the herd sale for Maurice Buxton of Yoxall, catalogues are out with a special entry of 31 in-calf heifers on 2nd June from Messrs Woodward.

Not enough forward and trade better on the week!

Cutting pigs topped at 148/kg for a trio of 79kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who also sold 84kg pigs at 146p/kg, and 78.5kg pigs at 142p/kg.

Bacon pigs topped at 148p/kg for a pair of 90kg pigs from J & B Fentem who also sold another pair of 90kg pigs at 144p/kg and PF & PD Parsons achieving 142p/kg for 88.5kg pigs and 90kg pigs at 141p/kg for J W Bailey, Cloudside.

Heavy pigs sold at 132p/kg for a 166kg pig from Chris Hine, Biddulph, and an 111kg pig at 120p/kg from J & B Fentem.

Cull sows sold to 69p/kg for a 282kg sow from MC & EA Beattie, who also sold other sows at 67p and 64p.

SPRING LAMBS (399);

A pleasing increase in numbers sold on a solid trade throughout with best sorts in very keen demand. Best types topping at 300p/kg regularly and a top of 314p/ kg for RG & AS Williamson, with vendors exceeding the 300p barrier for 11 best pens.

Handy weights best sold on the day with the vast majority of the 32-39kg sorts grossing top side of £100/head.

Heavy types selling to 250p for 50kg lambs from J A Bennett and top headage price of £127.20 and overall average headage price of £106.76.

More of the best quality types required every week.

BUTCHERS HOGGETS (193);

Number drying up and a shortage of best sorts on offer with more also showing adult teeth.

Best on offer to 239p/kg from D & J Williams, Basford and best headage price of £110.60.
