Bakewell market

-

MONDAY, JUNE 1

WHEN it is ‘haymaking’ weather we usually have to report a quiet market, but not today with all sections usefully busy with 622 cattle and 1,045 sheep on offer.

Store cattle numbers have held up well and the entry of 386 attracted plenty of interest with quality cattle looking very well sold indeed.

Steers reached £1,185 with a remarkable average of £774, heifers to £1,135 and feeding bulls to £880.

There were 85 finished cattle with a top figure of 233p and £1,715 and the average for the 26 heifers was a useful 188.1 pence.

Good to see another strong turnout of OTM and feeding cows.

The 97 head sold particularly well with top figures 165p and £1,800 with the average an excellent 132.5p.

More calves about with 54 of offer. bulls to £390 and heifers to £320.

In the sheep department, spring lambs are coming forward in ever increasing numbers with 546 this week.

Top figures 299p and £130.20 per head. The SQQ average taking a distinct lift from last week to a remarkable 277p

Old season lambs (hoggs) are drying up almost as fast as the land with only 184 this week.

The best on offer reached 237p and £124.31 with the SQQ emerging at 215.6p
